In the first part of this article we’ve told about the history of German attack aviation — its conception and evolution over the years of World War II. Also we’ve described the Tier IV and V aircraft that will be included in the new branch that we’re introducing with Update 1.7. Today we’ll take a look at medium and high Tier machines.
Junkers Ju 88P
This machine was based on the mass-produced Ju 88 bomber with a further adaptation for cracking tanks. During its history in Luftwaffe the aircraft had undergone several improvements and experiments with armament, which ranged from 37 mm cannons to 50 mm KwK-39 cannon and even 7.5 cm BK 75 mm cannon which eventually became a standard configuration for the Ju 88 P series.
Trials that were conducted in the experimental antitank regiment (Erprobungskommando) in late 1943 and 92nd antitank squadron (Panzerjagdstaffel 92) showed that the Ju 88 P-1 delivered satisfactory results against tanks, despite its main gun’s low firing rate. The aircraft was put in service on the Eastern front until late 1944, and later on took part in warfare over the Western front.
Researching Ju 88 P will cost 32 600 XP points when going from Ju 87 G and 38 800 XP points when going from Hs 129 B
In the game, the Ju 88 P is a heavy Attack Aircraft that uses its high caliber weapons to deliver punishing blows to the ground objects. Its top-tier armament – the 50 mm BK 5 – has a very low rate of fire, but is very accurate and deals massive amounts of damage. The Ju 88 P’s maneuverability is on par with that of heavy fighters, which allows it to compensate for its low speed as well as defend itself with its rear turret in dogfights.
Messerschmitt Ме 265
Alexander Lippisch designed this aircraft as a universal heavy hunter (Zerstörer) that was supposed to become a competitor to the Me 210. The machine featured an innovative tailless flying wing frame with pushing propellers. Unfortunately for Lippisch, the war ministry opted to go with the more conventional Me 410 design so that the Me 265 was never produced – not even as a test prototype.
Researching Me 265 will cost 67 500 XP points when switching from Me 410 and 75 500 XP points when going from Ju 88 P
In-game, the Me 265 can be categorized as somewhat in between the classic Heavy Fighters and Attack Aircraft. Its powerful armament and good speed lend themselves well to letting it perform multiple, effective runs at targets. However, the Me 265 is largely unsuitable for dogfighting because of its low maneuverability.
Messerschmitt Ме 329
After Me 265, the Messerschmitt Flugzeugbau GmbH factories continued their research into the tailless flying wing scheme with a new machine designed by Dr. Hermann Wurster. The idea was once again to build a universal hunter that would re-use multiple components from the mass-produced Me 410 to simplify construction and service. A full-scale mockup was built and tested but never put into service because the Me 410 was quite successful in the role that the Me 329 was being developed for, while the resources for new aircraft development and production were severely limited by that time.
In World of Warplanes, the Me 329 is a spiritual successor to the Me 265, featuring better armament and flight characteristics. It works well when allowed to take multiple runs at hard-to-crack targets and can take out any Heavy Fighter that would dare to go head-on with it. However, its low dynamic characteristics (acceleration rates, speed, maneuverability etc) are not high enough for dogfighting with anything other than other Soviet Attack Aircraft. Nonetheless, its low maneuverability is compensated by a very powerful turret that makes Me 329 a hard target for lighter aircraft, especially fighters.
Messerschmitt P. 1099B-2
Project 1099 was conceived by Messerschmitt as a further development of the Me 262 Heavy Fighter as a night fighter and heavy fighter. The designers wanted the plane to be able to switch between multiple armament configurations and also gave it a wider fuselage, a two-seated cockpit as well as a defensive turret. The attack version was supposed to be equipped with a powerful 5 cm Mk-214 cannon that would make the aircraft capable of destroying any target on the battlefield. The project was rejected by the RLM in early stages in spring 1944.
The P.1099 B-2 in the game is a high speed Attack Aircraft with powerful high caliber cannons (either 4x 30 mm or a single 50 mm “sniper” gun) and a heavy bomb load. Good defensive capabilities are provided by a turret that has three coupled 20 mm cannons in its top configuration that allow for excellent shooting angles.
This project was being developed simultaneously with the Me 1101 and was supposed to become a Heavy Fighter and Attack Aircraft. It was based on a highly unusual three-engine design where two of the engines were moved forward to both sides of the plane’s nose, while the third one was installed in the tail section. This was done to retain good balance and improve maneuvrability.
When the war ended, its blueprints were still in the early design stages.
In World of Warplanes, the Messerschmitt P.1102 B plays the role of a high speed Attack Aircraft that possesses good maneuverability for its class and great firepower thanks to its four 30 mm cannons with a high rate of fire. It will outshoot any Heavy Fighter in a head-on attack, but won’t be able to outmaneuver or outrun any of its foes. This machine is capable of dogfighting with planes of the likes of an IL-40P and has a powerful twin-linked 20 mm turret with excellent shooting angles that will force enemy fighters to be very careful when attacking the Messerschmitt.
As you can see, the German Attack Aircraft with their multitude of applicable tactics are quite different from Soviet Ilyushin machines. After conventional ground attack models (Fw 189 C), at medium Tiers, the branch starts featuring warbirds that focus on forward-facing armament as their main source of firepower (anti-tank Ju 87G, Hs 129 and Ju 88 P). At high Tiers, the field broadens further, offering universal heavy machines like the Me 265, Me 329 and jet-powered top-Tier models. The presented selection in the game does a good job representing the actual historical evolution that German Attack Aircraft have undergone up to the end of WWII. The German attack aircraft branch adds gameplay variety to its class and gives players a wide range of choice of how to fight in the air and destroy targets on the ground.
