The project to create a new twin engine, jet-powered fighter was started at the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau in May 1945. It was planned to use German-built BMW-003 turbojet engines placed in underwing nacelles. It’s worth noting that this engine placement was heavily influenced by German wartime designs. This scheme was later used in projects by other design bureaus such as Sukhoi, Antonov, Alexeev and Lavochkin.
The project was designated I-260, it is also mentioned in several sources as ‘Article F’. The planned armament included two NS-23 23mm cannons and one 37mm NS-37 cannon, all located in the nose part of the fuselage.
The bureau aimed to have a test-ready prototype by early September 1945. Research done on the parallel I-300 project however showed that the engine placement scheme used by I-260 did not have any advantages over a more promising scheme that had been proposed for the I-300 project. As a result the I-260 was cancelled at design documentation stage.
MiG I-260 in the game is an extremely interesting multirole fighter. It has powerful boost that enables the machine to change altitude echelons quickly and react to battle situations. Coupled with good vertical maneuverability boost will let you lose almost any tail, turn around and meet the enemy head on. But the main feature of the I-260 is its unique armament configuration. A good hit from the long range 57 mm cannon will rarely leave a chance to any enemy — even if they don’t proceed to the hangar, they won’t be able to continue fighting after sustaining critical damage. Two 23 mm NS-23 cannons with quite long overheating time add their firepower and allow the warbird to deal damage at medium quite effectively while waiting for the main caliber to cool down.
